Growing Up and Education
Dominic Cadbury was born on May 12, 1940. His grandfather was George Cadbury, who helped build the famous chocolate company. Dominic went to a well-known school called Eton College. Later, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and then earned a special business degree (an MBA) from Stanford University in the United States.
A Career in Business
Sir Dominic Cadbury joined the company Cadbury Schweppes in 1964. This company made both chocolates and drinks. He became a very important leader there. From 1983 to 1993, he was the chief executive, which means he was in charge of how the company was run every day.
After that, he became the chairman of the company. This role meant he led the board of directors. He stayed in this important position until he retired on his 60th birthday in 2000.
Other Important Roles
Besides his work at Cadbury Schweppes, Sir Dominic also held other big jobs. He was the chairman of the Economist Group, which publishes a famous news magazine. He also helped lead a music company called EMI.
He was also part of a group that studies the economy, called the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. From 2005, he was the chairman of a technology company named Misys plc.
Leading the University of Birmingham
On May 2, 2002, Sir Dominic Cadbury became the Chancellor of the University of Birmingham. The Chancellor is like the head or leader of a university. He took over from Sir Alex Jarratt.
He held this important role for many years, helping to guide the university. In 2013, he stepped down, and Lord Bilimoria became the new Chancellor.
Family Life
Sir Dominic Cadbury married Cecilia Sarah Symes in 1972. They have three daughters together. His brother, Sir Adrian Cadbury, also worked as a leader in the Cadbury company.
Special Recognition
Sir Dominic Cadbury was given a special honor in 1997. He was knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir" for his achievements. This happened during the Queen's Birthday Honours, which is a time when people are recognized for their contributions to the country.
