Dominic Carmon, a member of the Divine Word Missionaries (S.V.D.), was an important leader in the Catholic Church in America. He was born on December 13, 1930, and passed away on November 11, 2018. He served as an auxiliary bishop for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans from 1993 to 2006. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop lead a large area called an archdiocese.

About Bishop Dominic Carmon
Early Life and Education
Dominic Carmon was the oldest of seven brothers. He was born in Opelousas, Louisiana. From a young age, he felt called to serve the Church. He studied at a special school called a seminary in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He also attended Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa.
Becoming a Priest and Missionary Work
In 1946, Dominic Carmon joined the Society of the Divine Word. This is a group of Catholic missionaries. He became a priest on February 2, 1960. After becoming a priest, he spent seven years as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. This means he traveled to a faraway country to share his faith and help local communities.
Serving as a Pastor
When he returned to the United States, Father Carmon became a pastor (the leader of a church). He led St. Elizabeth's Church in Chicago, Illinois, from 1968 to 1985. Then, he led Our Lady of the Gardens Church, also in Chicago, from 1985 to 1988. Later, he became the pastor of Holy Ghost Church in his hometown of Opelousas. This church was known as the largest Black Catholic church in the country.
Becoming a Bishop
On December 16, 1992, a very special event happened. Pope John Paul II chose Dominic Carmon to become an Auxiliary Bishop for New Orleans. He also became a "Titular Bishop" of a place called Rusicade. This is a special title given to bishops who don't lead a specific area.
Bishop Carmon had his episcopal consecration on February 11, 1993. This is a special ceremony where a priest officially becomes a bishop. Archbishop Francis Schulte led the ceremony. Bishop Wilton Gregory and Bishop Harry Flynn also helped in the ceremony.
Retirement and Legacy
In the Catholic Church, bishops usually retire at age 75. Bishop Carmon retired as Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans on December 13, 2006. He passed away on November 11, 2018, at the age of 87. Bishop Dominic Carmon dedicated his life to serving others and his faith.
