Discovering Dominic Sonic: A French Music Journey
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Dominique Garreau, known as Dominic Sonic, started his musical adventure early. At just 16 years old, he left school to join a punk rock band called Kalashnikov. This band was based in Lamballe, France. He played with Kalashnikov for six years, performing in over 300 concerts! This experience helped him become a skilled performer.
Solo Career and Album Success
In 1987, Dominic Sonic began working on his own music. His first solo album, Cold Tears, was released two years later in 1989. A Belgian record label called Crammed Discs helped him share his music. Cold Tears was a big success, selling more than 40,000 copies across Europe. He also released a smaller album, called a mini-album, titled A s'y méprendre, with the same label.
Later, a director from Barclay records, Philippe Constantin, was so impressed that he signed Dominic Sonic. In 1991, Dominic released another album with Barclay. During a music tour in Hungary, Dominic had an accident. He needed to stay in the hospital for six months to recover. This time influenced his next album, Les Leurres, which came out in 1994.
New Labels and Creative Paths
Dominic Sonic decided to try something new in 1996. He left Barclay and started his own record label. Under his own label, he released Essais 94-96. This album was distributed by Musidisc, a company that later became part of Universal Music Group. This showed his independent spirit and dedication to his music.
Later Career and Collaborations
Dominic Sonic continued to be a vibrant part of the music scene. In 2002, he made a surprise appearance at the Rencontres Trans Musicales festival in Rennes, joining the famous band The Stooges on stage. He performed at many other festivals throughout the 2000s.
On October 15, 2007, he released his fifth album, Phalanstère # 7. In January 2008, he even acted! He performed alongside Jackie Berroyer in a play in Nantes. The play was called La loi des pauvres gens, named after one of his own songs. In 2009, Dominic celebrated the 20th anniversary of Cold Tears by performing with guitarist Vincent Sizorn.
From 2010 to 2014, he was part of a group called Nus when they reunited. He and the group also started a project called AK47 Blues Rendez-vous, releasing an album called The Octopus. His final album, Vanités#6, was released in the spring of 2015. He was also working on an album for another artist, Olivier Delacroix, around this time.
Dominic Sonic passed away on July 23, 2020, in Les Lilas, France. He left behind a wonderful collection of music for everyone to enjoy.
