Domselaar is a small town in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It's part of the San Vicente Partido area. The town is very close to the edge of a large city area called Greater Buenos Aires. But it's still a separate town and hasn't joined the big city yet.
History of Domselaar
The land where Domselaar is today used to have many paths. These paths led to a place called Tablada Vieja. Here, cattle were gathered for checking. Then, they were sent to places that prepared meat near the Riachuelo river.
Things became much easier when the General Roca Railway arrived in 1865. A British company, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway, built it. Their main goal was to help transport wool from Chascomús. This wool was sent to the market at Plaza Constitución.
The railway station was officially started on August 14, 1865. This date is seen as the founding day of Domselaar. After the station opened, more and more people came to live there. Many towns in the province of Buenos Aires grew up around railway lines.
In the 1990s, many state-run railway services stopped. This caused problems for many towns. Their train stations closed, and some towns struggled. Domselaar was one of the few towns that survived and even grew. This happened even after its station closed in 1994.
How Domselaar Got Its Name
The station, and later the town, was named after Antonio van Domselaar. He was a doctor from Holland. In 1832, he moved to Argentina with his wife and four children. Antonio bought a very large ranch. It was over 2,000 acres and about 40 kilometers south of Buenos Aires.
When the railway company wanted to build a line through his land, Antonio made an offer. He said he would give them the land for free. But only if the new railway station was named "Domselaar." The company agreed, and that's how the town got its name!
Trains Return to Domselaar
In the early 2000s, there were plans to bring the railway back. Many people in Domselaar work in Buenos Aires or nearby. The closest train station was Alejandro Korn, about 15 kilometers away. Before the trains returned, people used bus line 388. This bus connected Domselaar to Coronel Brandsen and Alejandro Korn.
Good news came on October 4, 2019! The Alejandro Korn-Chascomús train service started stopping at Domselaar again. Trenes Argentinos announced the first train. It stopped at the new station at 12:13 PM on that Friday. It was heading towards Chascomús.
