Domusnovas is a small town, also called a comune (municipality), in the beautiful Sardinia region of Italy. Its name, which can also be Domusnoas in the local Sardinian language, means "new houses."
This town is located on the island of Sardinia, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Cagliari, a larger city. It sits in a valley near the Cixerri river. Domusnovas is especially famous for its amazing natural caves, known as the Grottoes of San Giovanni, which are just a short distance from the town.
A Look at Domusnovas's Past
Domusnovas has a very long and interesting history. People have lived in this area since prehistoric times, which means even before written records existed!
Ancient Times
Long ago, during the Neolithic period (the New Stone Age), people built walls here. These walls showed that early communities lived and thrived in this area. There were also many ancient stone structures called nuraghe, which are unique to Sardinia.
When the Romans ruled the island, Domusnovas was a small village. It was an important stop on the road that connected Cagliari to Sulcis. This road was used to transport valuable ore (rock with metal inside) that was mined nearby.
The Middle Ages
Later, in the Middle Ages, Domusnovas became part of a local kingdom called the giudicato of Cagliari. A giudicato was like a small independent state ruled by a judge.
In 1257, soldiers from Pisa (a powerful city in Italy) took control of the area. Domusnovas then became a fief of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca. A fief was land given to a lord in exchange for loyalty and service.
In 1324, the Aragonese people, who came from what is now Spain, took over Domusnovas. This shows how many different groups have influenced the history of this small Italian town over thousands of years!
