Don Goodman's Football Journey
Don Goodman was born in Leeds, England. He played for many different football clubs throughout his career. These included famous teams like Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He even played for a team in Japan called Sanfrecce Hiroshima!
Starting Out in Football
When Don was a teenager, he tried out for Bradford City. At the same time, he played for a non-league team called Collingham. He also worked as an electrician.
Bradford City offered him a chance to become an apprentice. But Don chose a different path. He signed a non-contract deal instead. This meant he wasn't fully tied to the club yet.
He played his first senior game in May 1984 when he was just 17. He was still working as an electrician back then! Later that summer, he became a professional footballer. Even then, the club let him have one day off each week for college.
Amazing Moments on the Field
When Don was 18, in November 1984, he had an incredible game for Bradford City. He scored three goals, known as a hat-trick, in just 7 minutes! This happened after he came on as a substitute in an FA Cup game.
On 11 May 1985, Don was playing for Bradford City in a very important match. The team won the Third Division championship that day, earning them promotion. However, during this match, a terrible fire happened at the Valley Parade stadium.
Moving to New Teams
In December 1991, Don became Sunderland's most expensive player when they signed him from West Bromwich Albion. He was the last player signed by manager Denis Smith. Don couldn't play in the 1992 FA Cup Final for Sunderland because he had already played in the FA Cup for another team that season.
Later, in March 2001, Don joined Walsall. At the end of that season, Walsall earned promotion to a higher league through the play-offs. Don scored one of the goals in the final game, helping his team beat Reading.
Life After Playing
After retiring from playing football, Don Goodman continued to be involved in the sport. As of April 2020, he works as a football commentator. This means he talks about games for Sky Sports, helping fans understand what's happening on the field.
