Donald Ralph Goodman, born on May 9, 1966, is a former English professional footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a player who focused on scoring goals. His football career lasted for almost 20 years. During this time, he played in nearly 600 games in the Football League and scored 162 goals.

Don Goodman's Football Journey

Don Goodman was born in Leeds, England. He played for many different football clubs throughout his career. These clubs included Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also played for Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan, and other English clubs like Barnsley, Walsall, Exeter City, Doncaster Rovers, and Stafford Rangers. He also played for Motherwell in Scotland.

Starting Out in Football

As a teenager, Don Goodman tried out for Bradford City. At the same time, he was playing non-league football for a team called Collingham. He also worked as an electrician for the Leeds City Council.

Bradford City offered him a chance to join their team as an apprentice. However, he decided to take a different kind of deal that did not tie him to a long contract.

Early Professional Career

Don Goodman made his first professional appearance in May 1984 when he was 17 years old. Even after starting his professional career, he continued to work as an electrician for a while. That summer, he became a full-time professional footballer. The club still allowed him one day off each week to attend college.

In November 1984, when he was 18, Don Goodman achieved something amazing. He scored three goals in just seven minutes for Bradford City. This happened after he came on as a substitute in an FA Cup game against Tow Law Town.

On May 11, 1985, Don Goodman was playing for Bradford City in a very important match. His team won the Third Division championship that day. Sadly, during this match, a tragic fire occurred at the Valley Parade stadium.

Moving to New Teams

In December 1991, Don Goodman became Sunderland's most expensive player at the time. He joined them from West Bromwich Albion. This was the last player signed by manager Denis Smith. Smith was let go from his job later that month. Don Goodman was not able to play in Sunderland's matches for the 1992 FA Cup Final because he had already played in the cup for another team that season.

In March 2001, Don Goodman joined Walsall. At the end of that season, Walsall earned a promotion to a higher league. They achieved this by winning the play-offs. Don Goodman scored one of the goals in the final game when Walsall beat Reading.

Life After Playing Football

After retiring from playing, Don Goodman continued to be involved in football. As of April 2020, he has been working as a football commentator for Sky Sports. This means he helps describe the games for people watching on TV.
