Don Yeomans, born in 1958, is a talented Haida artist. He comes from Prince Rupert, British Columbia. He is famous for his silkscreen art. You can find his amazing artwork in the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. It is also always on display at the Canadian Museum of History.

Don Yeomans' Early Life and Learning

Don Yeomans was born in 1958. His hometown is Prince Rupert, British Columbia. When he was just twelve years old, his aunt, Freda Diesing, taught him to carve. Later, famous artists Robert Davidson and Bill Reid also taught him. In the 1980s, Don Yeomans learned even more. He spent two years working with Gitxzan artist Phil Janzé. This time helped him grow as an artist.

Don Yeomans' Art Career

Don Yeomans is best known for his beautiful silk screen printing. Many of these prints are part of a collection. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC has about 30 of his art pieces.

Famous Artworks and Challenges

In 1983, he created a mask called Thunderbird Spirit. This mask was shown in a book. Sadly, some of his art was copied. These fake copies were made and sold. An art dealer named Stephen Lazarous helped find these copies.

His artwork from 1987, called Gunarh and the Whale, is very special. You can see it at the Canadian Museum of History.

Honoring a Mentor

In 1998, Don Yeomans carved a special burial chest. He made it for his former teacher, Bill Reid. This was a way to honor his mentor.

Creating a Totem Pole

In 2002, Yeomans carved a huge totem pole. It stands 40 feet tall! This amazing pole is called The Stanford Legacy. You can find it at Stanford Law School.

Don Yeomans is also featured in books about art. He is part of a chapter in the 2008 book Raven travelling : two centuries of Haida art. This chapter talks about his creative spirit.

Don Yeomans' Family Life

Don Yeomans is married to his wife, Trace. They have two children, a son named Kyran and a daughter named Crystal. What's really cool is that he works with his whole family on art projects! They all create art together.
