Donald Angus Cameron of Lochiel (born August 2, 1946 – died October 20, 2023) was a very important leader in the Scottish Highlands. He was the 27th Lochiel, which means he was the Chief of Clan Cameron. A Clan Chief is like the head of a big family group. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness, representing the King or Queen in that area.

Early Life and Education

Donald Angus Cameron was the oldest of four children. His father was Sir Donald Hamish Cameron, who was the 26th Lochiel. His mother was Margot Gathorne-Hardy.

He went to a famous school called Harrow. After that, he studied history at Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university. He earned a Master of Arts degree there.

His Career and Public Service

When he was younger, Donald Cameron joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (TA) as a Lieutenant in 1966. This was part of the British Army. He later left the army in 1968. He then trained to become a chartered accountant, which is a professional who manages money and finances for businesses.

In 1983, a special guest stayed at Achnacarry Castle, which is the home of the Clan Cameron chiefs. This guest was Prince Naruhito, who is now the Emperor of Japan! He stayed there while on a trip to climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland.

When his father passed away in 2004, Donald Angus Cameron became the 27th Chief of Clan Cameron. He was also involved in charity work, serving as president of the Highland Society of London from 1994 to 1996.

He held several important public roles. In 1986, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness-shire. Later, from 2002 until 2021, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness-shire. This role means he was the King or Queen's personal representative in that area. He was also a Justice of the peace, helping with local legal matters. In 2018, he was given a special honour called the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) for his service.

Later Life and Family

Donald Angus Cameron faced health challenges from 1985 onwards. He passed away on October 20, 2023, at his home, Achnacarry, at the age of 77. His son, Donald Cameron, became the new Clan Chief. People remembered him as a very brave and kind person who was central to life in the West Highlands.

He married Lady Cecil Nennella Therese Kerr in 1974. They had four children:
