Donald Edward Newhouse (born August 5, 1929 – died May 26, 2026) was an American businessman. He owned a large company called Advance Publications. His father, Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr., started this company in 1922.
Advance Publications owns many different media businesses. These include Condé Nast, which publishes popular magazines like Vogue and The New Yorker. The company also owns many newspapers across the U.S., such as The Star-Ledger. Donald Newhouse also had a part ownership in a cable company called Charter Communications. He also had a share in Warner Bros. Discovery, a big entertainment company. In June 2024, Forbes magazine estimated that he had about $11 billion. He lived in New York City.
Early Life and School Days
Donald Newhouse was born in New York City. He came from a Jewish family and was the oldest of eight children. His father, Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr., was born in Manhattan. He was the one who started the family's media business.
Donald's mother, Mitzi Epstein, loved and supported the arts and helped many charities. She grew up in a well-off family in New York City. Donald and his brother, Samuel (Si) Newhouse Jr., both went to Horace Mann School in the Bronx. Neither of them finished their studies there. Donald enjoyed boxing and playing soccer. His brother Si worked as an assistant editor for the school's newspaper.
Helping Others: Philanthropy
Donald Newhouse was known for his generosity. In January 2020, he gave $75 million to Syracuse University. This money went to the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. This school is named after his father, Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr.
In March 2021, it was announced that Donald and his wife Susan started a special fund. They gave $20 million to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD). This charity helps people with a serious brain disorder. Their donation was the largest ever received by this charity.
Family Life and Later Years
Donald Newhouse married Susan Marley in 1955. She had just finished college at Wellesley College. They had three children together. The family mainly lived in New York City. However, they often spent their weekends at their farm in New Jersey.
Susan passed away in 2015 from a serious health condition. Donald's brother, Si Newhouse, also had a similar health issue. In 2010, Donald Newhouse was recognized by The Jerusalem Post as one of the world's richest Jewish people. Donald Newhouse passed away on May 26, 2026. He was 96 years old and died from lymphoma at his home in Lambertville, New Jersey.
