Who is Donaldson Romeo?
Early Life and Education
Donaldson Romeo was born in 1962 in a place called Salem, Montserrat. He went to Salem Primary School and then Montserrat Secondary School. After that, he studied at the George School, a boarding school in the United States. He started studying medicine at Temple University. However, he decided to return to Montserrat after one year. He came back to help his father with their family's hardware business.
A Change of Path
In 1984, Donaldson Romeo moved to the United Kingdom. There, he began a new career as an artist. He faced a difficult situation where he was asked to leave the country. But he received support from important people, including Members of Parliament (MPs) like Ken Livingstone and John Carlisle. He also got help from the National Portrait Gallery. Because of this support, the request for him to leave was changed.
After this experience, Romeo returned to Montserrat. He continued his work as an artist. Later, he rejoined his family's hardware business. In the mid-1990s, after the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted, he became a journalist. This eruption was a big natural event that changed many things on the island.
Starting in Politics
Donaldson Romeo first entered politics by running in elections. He was a candidate for the Montserrat Democratic Party in the 2006 general elections. In the 2009 elections, he ran as an independent candidate. This means he did not belong to a specific political party at that time. He was successfully elected to the parliament.
In 2011, Romeo took on an important role. He became the Leader of the Opposition. This means he was the main voice for the political parties that were not in power. He held this position until September 2014.
Leading Montserrat
On April 30, 2014, Donaldson Romeo started his own political group. He created the People's Democratic Movement (PDM). This new party was formed to take part in the upcoming elections. In September 2014, the PDM won a big victory. They won seven out of nine seats in the Legislative Assembly. This made the PDM the ruling party in Montserrat.
As the leader of the winning party, Donaldson Romeo became the Premier of Montserrat. He served as the island's top leader from September 2014 until November 2019. In October 2019, the members of his own party, the PDM, voted for a new leader. Paul Lewis, who was the Minister of Communication and Works, became the new leader of the PDM.
Continuing to Serve
After this, Donaldson Romeo decided to leave the PDM party. He ran in the 2019 general election again as an independent candidate. In November 2019, the people of Montserrat re-elected him. This means he continues to be a member of the island's Legislative Assembly. He still serves the people of Montserrat today.
