About Donaldson Romeo
Early Life and Education
Donaldson Romeo was born in a place called Salem, Montserrat, in 1962. He went to Salem Primary School and then Montserrat Secondary School. Later, he studied at the George School, which is a boarding school in the United States. He started learning medicine at Temple University. However, after one year, he returned to Montserrat. He came back to help his father with their family business, which sold hardware supplies.
From Artist to Journalist
In 1984, Donaldson Romeo moved to the United Kingdom. There, he became an artist, creating many artworks. At one point, he faced a challenge to stay in the country. But with support from important people like Members of Parliament Ken Livingstone and John Carlisle, and even the National Portrait Gallery, he was able to continue his work there.
After this, Romeo returned to Montserrat. He kept working as an artist. Later, he rejoined his family's hardware business. In the mid-1990s, after the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted, he started a new career. He became a journalist, reporting on important events for the island.
A Career in Montserrat's Politics
Starting in Government
Donaldson Romeo first got involved in politics in 2006. He ran as a candidate for the Montserrat Democratic Party in the general elections. In 2009, he ran again, this time as an independent candidate, and he was elected to parliament.
In 2011, Romeo took on an important role. He became the Leader of the Opposition. This means he was the main voice for the political parties not in power. He held this position until September 2014.
Leading the Island
On April 30, 2014, Donaldson Romeo started a new political group. It was called the People's Democratic Movement (PDM). He created this party to take part in the upcoming elections.
In September 2014, the PDM won a big victory. They won seven out of nine seats in the Legislative Assembly. This meant they became the ruling party. Because of this win, Donaldson Romeo became the Premier of Montserrat. He served in this top leadership role until November 2019.
Continuing to Serve
In October 2019, there was a change in the PDM party. Donaldson Romeo was no longer the leader of the party. Paul Lewis, who was the island's Minister of Communication and Works, took over as the new leader. After this, Romeo decided to leave the PDM party. He ran in the November 2019 general election as an independent candidate.
Donaldson Romeo was re-elected in November 2019. This means he continues to hold a seat in Montserrat's Legislative Assembly. He still helps make important decisions for the people of Montserrat today.
