The Premier of Montserrat is like the main leader or head of the government for Montserrat. Montserrat is a special territory that belongs to the United Kingdom. The Premier is chosen by the Governor of Montserrat. The Governor acts on behalf of the King of the United Kingdom, currently King Charles III.
Right now, the Premier of Montserrat is Reuben Meade. He is part of a political group called the United Alliance. The Governor picks the Premier from people who are members of the Legislative Assembly. This Assembly has nine members who are elected by the people.
Before 2011, this important job was called the Chief Minister of Montserrat. The name changed on September 27, 2011. This happened when a new set of rules, called the Montserrat Constitution Order 2010, started. Interestingly, Reuben Meade was both the last Chief Minister and the first Premier of Montserrat!
The Premier works with a group called the Cabinet. This group helps run the government. The Cabinet includes the Premier, the person in charge of legal matters (the Attorney-General), the person in charge of money (the Financial Secretary), and three other ministers. One of these ministers is also chosen to be the Deputy Premier.

How the Premier is Chosen
The Premier is not directly elected by everyone. Instead, the Governor of Montserrat chooses them. The Governor acts on behalf of the King of the United Kingdom. The person chosen must be a member of the Legislative Assembly. This Assembly is made up of nine people elected by the public.
A Change in Title: From Chief Minister to Premier
For many years, from 1960 to 2011, the leader of Montserrat's government was called the Chief Minister. This changed on September 27, 2011. A new set of rules, called the Montserrat Constitution Order 2010, made the change official. The very first person to hold the title of Premier was Reuben Meade. He was also the last person to be called Chief Minister.
Working with the Cabinet
The Premier leads a group called the Cabinet. This group helps the Premier run the government. The Cabinet includes key officials like the Attorney-General (who handles legal matters) and the Financial Secretary (who manages the island's money). There are also three other ministers in the Cabinet. One of these ministers is chosen to be the Deputy Premier, who can step in if the Premier is unavailable.
