History of Doniphan
How Doniphan Started
A group of people formed a company on November 11, 1854. This company helped to create the community of Doniphan. Later, in 1869, Doniphan became an officially recognized community. This is called being incorporated.
Who Doniphan is Named After
The community was named after a man named Alexander William Doniphan. He was an important military leader. He fought in the Mexican–American War.
The Old Post Office
Doniphan had its own post office for many years. It first opened on March 3, 1855. People could send and receive mail there. The post office stayed open for a long time. However, it closed down on August 15, 1943.
