Donald "Donnie" Nathaniel Boyce (born September 2, 1973) is an American former professional basketball player. He is now a head coach for Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois. Donnie played college basketball at the University of Colorado.
Early Life and College Basketball
Donnie Boyce grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He played high school basketball at Proviso East in Maywood, Illinois. He was a talented player, playing alongside future NBA stars Michael Finley and Sherrell Ford.
After high school, Donnie went to the University of Colorado. He became a star player for the Buffaloes. When he finished his college career in 1995, he was the team's all-time leading scorer. This means he had scored more points than any other player in the school's history at that time! Another player, Richard Roby, later broke his record in 2008.
Professional Basketball Career
In 1995, Donnie Boyce was chosen in the 1995 NBA draft. The Atlanta Hawks picked him as the 13th player in the second round. He played for the Hawks for parts of two seasons, from 1996 to 1997. During his time in the NBA, he played in 30 games.
Donnie's professional career lasted for 11 years. Besides the NBA, he also played in other leagues in the United States. These included the CBA and the USBL. He also played basketball in other countries, like Argentina and France.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Donnie Boyce started coaching. In 2011, he became the head coach for his old high school, Proviso East. His teams were very successful!
- In the 2011–12 season, his team won 32 games and lost only 1. They made it all the way to the state championship game in the IHSA tournament.
- In the 2012–13 season, his team had a great record of 29 wins and 5 losses. They reached the state semi-finals.
Both times, his teams lost to the Simeon Wolverines, a strong team led by future NBA player Jabari Parker.
In October 2015, Donnie took on a new role. He became an assistant coach for the Texas Legends. This team plays in the NBA Development League, which is now called the G League. It's a league where players can develop their skills to play in the NBA.
Donnie Boyce returned to Proviso East High School in March 2016. He was reinstated as the head coach there, continuing to lead young basketball players.
