History of Doole
How Doole Got Its Name
The area around Doole was first a ranching community. It was called Gansel. This name came from a well-known local family. The first settlement grew around Crossroads School. This school moved to the area in 1908 from Fort Concho.
Around 1911, the people living there wanted to open a post office. They asked David Doole, Jr., who was the postmaster in Brady, for help. The postal service in Washington, D.C., did not approve the name Gansel. So, the residents decided to name their community "Doole" to thank Mr. Doole for his help.
Growth and Change
By 1914, Doole had about 25 people living there. In 1936, East Gansel School closed. Its students then went to school in Doole. Another community called Stacy also started sending its students to Doole.
By the 1940s, Doole had grown to about 250 people. Younger students, up to sixth grade, went to elementary school in Doole. Older students were taken by bus to Melvin for secondary school.
Decline and Modern Day
After World War II, Doole's population started to shrink. This was mainly because many small family farms joined together. A big drought in the 1950s also made many farmers leave. They moved to find better job chances.
By the mid-1960s, only about 40 people lived in Doole. This number went up to about 74 in 1970. It stayed around that number for the rest of the 1900s. Even though Doole is an unincorporated community, it still has its own post office. Its ZIP code is 76836.
Education
Students in Doole attend public schools. These schools are part of the Brady Independent School District.
