Doreen June Mantle (born 22 June 1926 – died 9 August 2023) was a talented actress from South Africa who also became a British citizen. She was best known for playing Jean Warboys in the popular TV show One Foot in the Grave from 1990 to 2000. Doreen Mantle appeared in many British television series starting in the 1960s, including The Duchess of Duke Street, Casualty, The Bill, Doctors, and Coronation Street. She also played a friendly lollipop lady named Queenie in Jam & Jerusalem from 2006 to 2009.

Doreen Mantle had a long and successful career in acting, performing in many different places.

On Stage and Radio

Doreen worked a lot in theatre, appearing in famous plays like My Fair Lady, The Seagull, and Hamlet. She also traveled around Britain with the play Billy Liar. She performed at the important National Theatre in a play called The Voysey Inheritance. In 1979, she won a special award called the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the play Death of a Salesman. This award is one of the highest honors in British theatre.

Besides stage work, Doreen also acted on the radio for BBC Radio 3 and BBC World Service. She played the wife of a rabbi in the funny radio series The Attractive Young Rabbi on BBC Radio 4.

Doreen Mantle also appeared in films. She played Mrs Shaemen in Barbra Streisand's movie Yentl in 1983.

Later in her career, from 2010 to 2011, Doreen was seen in the well-known TV soap opera Coronation Street. She played Joy Fishwick, who was the mother of a character named Colin Fishwick. Doreen Mantle had a very long list of roles in both films and television shows throughout her career, showing her amazing talent and dedication to acting.

Doreen June Mantle was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 22 June 1926. She studied at the University of the Witwatersrand before moving to the United Kingdom when she was 23 years old. She decided to move because she disagreed with Apartheid, which was a system of unfair rules and separation in South Africa at the time. She then made London her home.

Doreen married Graham Smith in 1953. They had two sons together, but they later divorced. Doreen Mantle passed away on 9 August 2023, at the age of 97.
