Doris Bures (born August 3, 1962) is an important Austrian politician. She is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Currently, she serves as the Third President of the Austrian National Council. This is a very important role in Austria's government.
Before this, she was the President of the National Council from 2014 to 2017. Then, she served as its Second President from 2017 to 2024. She also worked as the Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology from 2008 to 2014.

Early Life and Education
Doris Bures was born in Vienna, Austria. She went to elementary school and then a commercial school. After her studies, she started working with young people.
- In 1980, she became a federal secretary for the International Union of Socialist Youth.
- From 1985 to 1986, she helped young people who were looking for jobs.
- She worked as a secretary for a local social democratic group in Vienna from 1988 to 1994.
- In 1995, she became the general secretary of the Austrian tenant association.
- She also served as the executive director (Bundesgeschäftsführerin) of the SPÖ party from 2000 to 2007 and again in 2008.
Political Journey
Starting in Local Politics
Doris Bures began her political career in her local community.
- From 1987 to 1990, she was a district councillor in Wien-Liesing.
- Since 1995, she has been a deputy leader for her party in the Liesing district.
- She was also the chairwoman of the SPÖ-women's group in Liesing from 2000 to 2006.
Working in National Government
Bures moved from local politics to national politics, taking on bigger roles.
- She was a member of the National Council of Austria for many years.
- She served as a minister without a specific department in the Gusenbauer cabinet in 2007.
- Later, she became the Minister for Women, Media, and Public Service.
- From December 2, 2008, she was the Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology.
- In September 2014, she was chosen to be the President of the National Council.
Important Role as Acting President
On July 8, 2016, the Austrian President Heinz Fischer finished his term. At that time, the job of Acting President was shared by the three presidents of the National Council. These were Doris Bures, Norbert Hofer, and Karlheinz Kopf.
Alexander Van der Bellen was elected President on December 4, 2016. He received support from 53.3% of the voters. Hofer, Bures, and Kopf continued as joint acting Presidents until Van der Bellen officially took office in January 2017.
Current Activities
Since 2018, Doris Bures has been part of the Austrian group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). She works on the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy.

Doris Bures has also held other significant positions outside of her direct political roles.
- Austrian Academy of Sciences: She has been the Chairwoman of the Senate since 2014.
- Margaretha Lupac Foundation: She has been the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees since 2014.
- National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism: She was the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees from 2014 to 2017.
