Doris Bures was born on August 3, 1962. She is an Austrian politician who belongs to the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Currently, she serves as the Third President of the Austrian National Council.
From 2014 to 2017, Doris Bures was the President of the National Council. After that, from 2017 to 2024, she served as its Second President. Before these important roles, she was the Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology from 2008 to 2014.

Early Life and Education
Doris Bures went to elementary school and then a commercial school. She started working in 1980 as a federal secretary for the International Union of Socialist Youth. This group helps young people.
Between 1985 and 1986, she worked on a project that helped young people who didn't have jobs. Later, from 1988 to 1994, she was a secretary for a local social democratic group in Vienna. In 1995, she became the general secretary of the Austrian tenant association, which helps people who rent homes.
Political Journey
Starting in Local Politics
Doris Bures began her political career in her local area. From 1987 to 1990, she was a district councillor in Wien-Liesing. This means she helped make decisions for her local community.
Since 1995, she has been a deputy leader for her party in the Liesing district. She also led the SPÖ-women's group in Liesing from 2000 to 2006.
Working in National Politics
Doris Bures became a member of the National Council of Austria in 1990. The National Council is like Austria's parliament, where laws are made. She served there for many years.
From 2008 to 2014, she was the Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology. This job meant she was in charge of things like roads, trains, and new technologies in Austria. In September 2014, she was chosen to be the President of the National Council. This is a very important leadership role in the parliament.
Acting President of Austria
On July 8, 2016, something special happened. The President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, finished his time in office. When this happens, the three presidents of the National Council temporarily take over the role of Acting President. Doris Bures was one of these three presidents, along with Norbert Hofer and Karlheinz Kopf.
They served as Acting President until a new president was chosen. Alexander Van der Bellen was elected President on December 4, 2016. He officially became President in January 2017. Until then, Doris Bures and her colleagues helped lead the country.
International Role
Since 2018, Doris Bures has also been part of the Austrian group that goes to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). In PACE, she works on the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy. This means she helps discuss important political issues with people from other European countries.
Other Important Activities
Doris Bures also holds other important positions:
- She is the Chairwoman of the Senate for the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 2014). This group is very important for science and research in Austria.
- She is the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees for the Margaretha Lupac Foundation (since 2014).
- From 2014 to 2017, she was the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees for the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism. This fund helps people who suffered during a difficult time in history.
