Barbara Prammer (born Thaller; 11 January 1954 – 2 August 2014) was an important Austrian politician. She was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). In 2006, she made history as the first woman to become President of the National Council of Austria. This is a very high position, similar to the speaker of a parliament. She held this job until she passed away.

About Barbara Prammer
Barbara Prammer was born in a small town called Ottnang am Hausruck in Upper Austria. She started her career working for the local government there.
From 1978, she studied sociology at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. She earned her university degree in 1986. After her studies, she worked as an expert in vocational and social education. She also led the department for women's affairs at an employment agency in Linz.
Her Start in Politics
In 1990, Barbara Prammer became the president of the SPÖ women's organization in Upper Austria. The SPÖ is her political party. One year later, she became a deputy and vice-president in the Upper Austrian state parliament, called the Landtag.
From 1995 to 1997, she was a Minister (Landesrat) in the Upper Austrian state government. Her responsibilities included housing and protecting nature.
Becoming a National Leader
In 1995, Prammer joined the main leadership team of the SPÖ party. Two years later, the Chancellor, Viktor Klima, chose her to be the Federal Minister for Women Affairs and Consumer Protection.
She strongly believed in making sure men and women had equal chances. This is called gender equality. She worked to support policies that helped women. She held this important role until 2000. After a new government was formed, she became the vice chairwoman of the SPÖ group in the National Council. The National Council is Austria's main parliament.
President of the National Council
On 16 June 2004, Barbara Prammer was elected Vice President of the National Council. After the 2006 election, she became the President of the National Council. She was re-elected to this position two more times, in 2008 and 2013.
During her time as President, she worked to protect the rights of smaller political groups in parliament. She also focused on remembering Austria's past, especially the time when the Nazis were in power.
Her Later Years
In September 2013, Barbara Prammer shared that she was battling cancer. She said she would continue her duties, but her deputy, Fritz Neugebauer, sometimes filled in for her.
Barbara Prammer passed away from pancreatic cancer on 2 August 2014. She was 60 years old. A special state funeral was held for her on 9 August. Many important people attended, including the Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Chancellor Werner Faymann. Other European parliament leaders also came to honor her. Barbara Prammer was cremated, and her ashes were buried in Vienna Central Cemetery.
She was married from 1980 to 2001 and had two children.
Awards and Honours
Barbara Prammer received several important awards for her work:
- In 2000, she received the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Sash for her service to Austria.
- In 2014, she was given a special membership in the Legion of Honour from France. This was for her efforts in supporting women's rights and democratic values.
- In 2007, she received the Knights Grand Cross Order of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic from Italy.
