Dornot (pronounced "dor-NO") was once a small town, also known as a commune, in northeastern France. It is located in the Moselle department, which is like a county.
Dornot sits right on the left bank of the Moselle River. In 2019, about 167 people lived there. On January 1, 2016, Dornot joined with another town to form a new, larger commune called Ancy-Dornot.
What is Dornot?
Dornot is a small place in the Moselle region of France. It's known for its quiet location by the Moselle River. Before it merged, it was its own small community.
History of Dornot
Dornot has a special place in history, especially during World War II. In September 1944, a major event happened there.
The Battle of Dornot
During World War II, American forces tried to cross the Moselle River. General George S. Patton led the American XX Corps in this effort. They attempted to cross the river at Dornot.
The German forces were ready and fought very hard to defend their position. This led to intense fighting around Dornot. The Germans successfully stopped the American crossing at this point. This battle was part of a bigger series of fights known as the Lorraine Campaign.
