History of Metz Arrondissement
The Arrondissement of Metz was created on January 1, 2015. Before this, there were two separate areas: the Arrondissement of Metz-Campagne (meaning "countryside") and the Arrondissement of Metz-Ville (meaning "city"). These two areas were joined together to form the new, larger Arrondissement of Metz.
Geography of Metz Arrondissement
The Arrondissement of Metz is in the western part of the Moselle department. It shares borders with other arrondissements. To the north is the Thionville area. To the east, it borders the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle area. The Sarrebourg-Château-Salins area is to the southeast. Finally, to the south and west, it borders the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
The Arrondissement of Metz covers an area of about 1,088.7 square kilometers (about 420.3 square miles). In 2014, about 341,821 people lived here. This means the population density was about 314 people per square kilometer.
