This arrondissement is quite new! It was created on January 1, 2015. Before that, there were two separate arrondissements: Sarrebourg and Château-Salins. They were joined together to form this new, larger area.

The Sarrebourg-Château-Salins arrondissement is located in the southernmost part of the Moselle department. It shares its borders with several other areas:
- To the north, it's next to the Forbach-Boulay-Moselle and Sarreguemines arrondissements.
- To the northeast and east, it borders the Bas-Rhin department.
- To the south, you'll find the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
- To the west, it's next to the Metz arrondissement.
