Working in Florida's Government
Dorothy Hukill spent many years working in Florida's state government. She helped make laws and decisions for the people of Florida.
In the Florida House of Representatives
In 2004, Dorothy Hukill decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives. The person who held the seat before her, Suzanne Kosmas, could not run again because of "term limits." This means there's a rule about how many times someone can be elected to the same job.
Dorothy Hukill won the election and became a State Representative. She represented the 28th District in southern Volusia County. She worked on important issues. For example, she helped create a program for solar energy. This program gave money to homes and businesses to use solar power. She wanted to bring more solar energy companies to Florida.
She was re-elected several times. In 2006 and 2008, she won against William Smalley. In 2010, she won her final term in the House.
In the Florida Senate
In 2012, Dorothy Hukill could not run for the House again because of term limits. So, she decided to run for the Florida Senate. The Senate is another part of Florida's state government. The areas that politicians represent were also changed, or "redrawn," at this time.
She ran for the new 8th District. She won her party's nomination without anyone running against her. In the main election, she ran against Frank Bruno. It was a very close election, and both sides spent a lot of money. Even though it was a tough race, Dorothy Hukill won with 57% of the votes.
As a Senator, Dorothy Hukill worked on new laws. She supported a law that would help manufacturers. This law meant they wouldn't have to pay sales tax on equipment for three years. She believed this would help businesses grow. She also voted against a law that would make people pay sales tax when they bought things online.
In 2016, her Senate district was changed again.
Later Life and Passing
On September 28, 2018, Dorothy Hukill announced that she would not run for re-election. She was very sick with cervical cancer. She passed away from the illness on October 2, 2018.
