The Story of Double Teamed
In 1985, fourteen-year-old identical twins Heather and Heidi Burge faced a big change. Their dad wanted them to leave their old school. He hoped a new school would give them better chances for college sports scholarships. Heidi felt she wasn't as good at sports as Heather. To find her own path, she decided to join a school play.
Starting a New School
The twins joined their new school to play volleyball. But the girls' basketball coach noticed Heather because she was tall. Heather saw this as a chance to get stronger for volleyball season. She joined the basketball team. There, she met Nicky Williams, the star player of the Palos Verdes High School Sea Kings team. Meanwhile, Heidi found out her dad had told the coach that both twins would play basketball. This was a problem because Heidi had already planned to be in the school play.
Both Heather and Heidi were very angry about this. Heather didn't want Heidi on the team. Heidi thought Heather had convinced their dad to make her play. Heidi really wanted to be independent and follow her own interests.
Teamwork and Rivalry
When the twins first joined the Sea Kings, they didn't make a great first impression. They tried to act like they were rich, like some of their teammates. Heather and Nicky quickly became rivals. Nicky even tried to get the Burge twins into trouble at school.
Eventually, Heather and Heidi became friends with Nicky. They saw that Nicky's dad was always busy with work and missed her basketball games. This helped them understand her better.
Learning to Play Together
At their first basketball tournament in New York, the team won second place. Heather was even named the MVP. But in another game, Heidi was chosen to take the game-winning free throws. This made Heather, who was usually the star, very jealous. Later, Heather played a late-night one-on-one game with Galen, an older basketball player. During the game, Heather fell and badly twisted her ankle. This meant she couldn't play in the next game.
While sitting out, Heather realized how important teamwork was. She saw that being a "superstar" wasn't everything. Despite her injury, she decided to play again. Her effort paid off! With some smart teamwork, Heidi scored the winning basket for the Sea Kings.
Future Dreams
After the game, the coach talked to the twins and their parents, Mary and Larry Burge. The coach suggested the girls go to summer basketball camps. She said they had a very bright future. Mr. Burge proudly said his daughters would play college basketball. But the coach added, "Maybe more. There's talk of a women's pro-league." Mr. Burge then apologized for pushing Heather so hard and for making Heidi play basketball. The girls forgave him. Mr. Burge also said Heidi had plans for a summer drama camp. This showed how important it is to have different interests.
The movie then shows a flashforward to the future. Both Burge twins are playing on professional WNBA teams! Heidi plays for the Los Angeles Sparks and Heather plays for the Sacramento Monarchs. Before a game, Heather tells Heidi, "Once second best, always second best." The game starts with a tip-off, and they both jump for the ball.
In real life, the twins did play in the WNBA, but not at the same time. They never played against each other in a WNBA game.
