Doug Bailey (October 5, 1933 - June 10, 2013) was an American expert who helped politicians with their campaigns. He also started The Hotline, a daily news service about American politics. It was known for being fair to both main political parties.

Doug Bailey's Early Life and Career
Doug Bailey was born in Cleveland on October 5, 1933. He went to Colgate University and earned his first degree in 1954. Later, he continued his studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He earned advanced degrees there between 1957 and 1962.
From 1968 to 1987, Doug Bailey was the president of a company called Bailey Deardourff and Associates. This company was one of the first in the country to help politicians with their campaigns.
He worked with many Republican politicians. These included President Gerald Ford. He also helped many senators and governors.
Starting The Hotline
In 1987, Doug Bailey started The Hotline. This was a daily political newsletter. It was sent out by fax. He wanted it to be a place where people could get news about politics that was fair to everyone. Each issue included a fun section with political jokes. He sold The Hotline in 1996.
Helping Others and New Ideas
After stepping away from his daily work, Doug Bailey spent time helping with many good causes.
He was one of the people who started Unity08. This was a group that wanted to improve politics. They hoped to create a new political party for the 2008 United States presidential election. The goal was to bring the country together. He even appeared on The Colbert Report to talk about his ideas.
Doug Bailey also started Freedom's Answer. This group worked to encourage more people to vote. He worked on this with Mike McCurry. Mike McCurry used to be a press secretary for President Clinton. Doug Bailey also served on the board of directors for the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
In 1994, Doug Bailey helped start another daily news service. This one was for the sports world. It was called the Sports Business Daily. It was sold in 1996.
In January 2008, Doug Bailey and another co-founder from Unity08 started a new effort. They wanted to encourage New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for president. They hoped he would run as an independent candidate.
Doug Bailey was also part of the Council on American Politics. This group brought together leaders in politics and communication. They worked on important issues for George Washington University's Graduate School of Political Management.
Doug Bailey passed away on June 10, 2013.

Doug Bailey was married to Patricia P. Bailey. She was a commissioner for the Federal Trade Commission from 1979 to 1988. They had two children together.
