Early Life and Comedy Start
Doug Williams was born in Montgomery, Alabama. He started doing stand-up comedy in 1990. This was five years before he graduated from Alabama State University in 1995.
Doug Williams's Career Journey
After college, Doug Williams moved to Los Angeles. This is a big city in California where many actors and comedians live. He got small parts in movies like The Nutty Professor and First Kid, both released in 1996.
Since then, he has appeared as a guest on many TV shows. One of these was The Bernie Mac Show. Doug Williams has also been the host and a main producer for "Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-up" for several seasons.
Williams once planned to write his own TV show. It was going to be called Domestic Doug. The show was about a stand-up comedian named "Doug Salter" trying to succeed in Hollywood. This character was a lot like Williams himself. However, this TV show project never happened.
The Emmitt Smith Roast Incident
Doug Williams became well-known online in the mid-2000s. This happened when a video clip of him from a 2002 comedy event appeared on the internet. The event was a "roast" for famous football player Emmitt Smith. A roast is a comedy show where people make fun of a special guest in a friendly way.
Jamie Foxx, another famous comedian, was hosting the event. During Williams's performance, Foxx kept interrupting him. He would speak into his own microphone and make funny, sarcastic comments. It was like Foxx was pretending to be Williams's inner thoughts. For example, he said things like, "Maybe I should say something nice about Emmitt and... wrap it up," or "or maybe I should say something about how black people have to struggle. Yeah, that'll get em on my side."
In February 2010, Williams talked about this event in an interview. He said, "I think a lot of people read more into it than it was." He explained that he wasn't used to roasts at the time. "The situation just kind of caught me off-guard," he mentioned. He also said that he learned a lot from it and has grown since then. Williams added that Jamie Foxx was already very famous back then, and most people didn't know who Doug Williams was.
