In 1957, he became a professor of Mathematics at the University of Keele. While he was there, he wrote a very important book called The Theory of Electromagnetism. This book made him a top expert in the field of electromagnetism.

In 1965, he moved to the University of Dundee (which was then part of the University of St Andrews). He became the professor of Applied Mathematics there. He worked at the University of Dundee until he retired in 1992. After he retired, he was given the special title of Emeritus Professor.
