Douglas Mountain, also called Douglas Hill, is a cool small mountain. You can find it in the towns of Sebago, Maine and Baldwin, Maine in the United States. It got its name from early European settlers, John and Andrew Douglas. People from the United States first settled here in the 1830s. This mountain is part of a small group of hills. They are known as the Saddleback Hills. These hills are located on the west side of Sebago Lake. The very top of Douglas Mountain is the second highest spot in all of Cumberland County, Maine!
A Mountain with a View
In 1892, a doctor from New York named William Blackman bought Douglas Mountain. He also bought the land around it. Dr. Blackman built a special stone tower at the very top. This tower is sixteen feet tall. From the tower, you can see amazing views all around. You can see Sebago Lake and the tall Presidential Mountains. You can also spot the city of Portland. Plus, you get to see many of the lakes and foothills in Western Maine.
Protecting Douglas Mountain
Later, a group called The Nature Conservancy bought the land. They wanted to protect it from being built on. This means they made sure no houses or buildings would go up there. After protecting the land, The Nature Conservancy gave it to the town of Sebago. Now, the town owns it. This allows everyone to visit and enjoy the mountain for fun activities.
