Sebago's History
Sebago was first called Flintstown. It was given to soldiers from Captain John Flint's company in 1774. This was a reward for their service. The land grant replaced an older one from 1735. That first grant was for an area now known as Walpole, New Hampshire. But the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire changed, making the old grant invalid.
On June 23, 1802, Flintstown became the town of Baldwin. Later, on February 10, 1826, Sebago separated from Baldwin. It became its own town and was named after Sebago Lake. Over time, some land was added from Denmark in 1830. Then, in 1834, some land was used to help create the town of Naples.
The first European settlers were Lumberjacks and woodsmen. They left after cutting down the first large pine trees. In 1790, Joseph Lakin from Groton, Massachusetts, built a cabin. He then brought his family to live there. The land in Sebago is very uneven and rocky. It was hard work to clear land for farming. However, the soil was good and grew many crops.
Mills were built where there was water power. These mills made things like lumber, wooden boxes (shooks), and boots and shoes. In 1832, the Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened. This helped increase trade between Sebago Lake and Portland.
By the early 1870s, the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad brought visitors and goods to Sebago Lake Station. From there, steamboats took people to different spots around the lake. Many Inns, hotels, and summer camps opened. Sebago became a popular place for vacations. It is still a recreation area today.
In 1906, a youth group called the Order of Sir Galahad started Camp O-AT-KA in East Sebago. This was an Episcopal organization for young people.
