The Story of Doutor Coffee
Doutor Coffee opened its very first European-style coffee shop in Harajuku, Japan. This happened on April 18, 1980.
A Small Beginning
The first shop was tiny, only about nine square meters! Even though it was small and had a lot of competition nearby, the Doutor Coffee shop became very successful. This success helped it grow into the large company it is today.
Growing the Business
Doutor Coffee started its own coffee farm in 1991. This farm was in Kona District, Hawaii, a famous place for growing coffee. They opened a second farm in 1995. In 1999, the company also launched a new, more casual coffee shop chain called Excelsior Caffé.

However, Doutor Coffee believed that roasting with hot air "takes away the original flavor of the coffee." So, they looked for different ways to roast their beans.

They discovered that open flame roasting was their favorite method. This method helps keep the coffee's original taste. Doutor Coffee even researched and developed its own special industrial open flame roaster to make sure their coffee tasted perfect.
