Dove, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dove is a small, quiet place in Laclede County, Missouri. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that don't have their own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place where people live close together, but it's not officially a city or town. It doesn't have a mayor or its own police department. Services like roads and schools are usually managed by the county government. Dove is one of these unique places in Missouri.

Where is Dove Located?

You can find Dove along Missouri Route 5. It's about half a mile north of where Route 5 meets Missouri Route F. If you travel north from Dove, you'll reach Decaturville in Camden County, which is about 7.5 miles away. To the southeast, about five miles on Route F, is the community of Sleeper. The larger city of Lebanon is about seven miles south of Dove. Small streams that flow into Dry Auglaize Creek are also found nearby.

The Story Behind the Name

The name "Dove" has a simple and interesting history. A post office was opened in this community way back in 1899. It stayed open for about 30 years, closing in 1929. The people who lived there decided to name the community "Dove" because there were so many mourning doves in the area, especially near a local pond. These peaceful birds were a common sight, making "Dove" a fitting name for the community.
