History of Downtown Anchorage
The area we call Downtown today was once the site of a big event in 1915. This was the Anchorage Land Auction, where plots of land were sold. This auction helped create the grid pattern of streets you see in Downtown Anchorage now. Before that, the very first townsite was a simple tent city. It was located near Ship Creek, in an area now known as Government Hill.
