Downtown Columbia is the busy heart of Columbia, Missouri. It is the main area for businesses, government, and fun activities. Three colleges are located around downtown. These are the University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College.
Downtown Columbia covers about one square mile. It is surrounded by the University of Missouri to the south. Stephens College is to the east, and Columbia College is to the north. This area is important for finance and business in Columbia. There are also plans to bring more visitors here. These plans focus on the area's old buildings and unique, artistic vibe. The buildings in downtown are not super tall. The 10-story Tiger Hotel, built in 1928, and the 15-story Paquin Tower are the tallest.

The Downtown Columbia Historic District is a special area. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it has important historical buildings. This historic district was first created in 2006. It was made bigger in 2008 to include more historic spots.
