Gary Miller (born September 15, 1958), known by his stage name Dr. Know, is an American musician. He became famous as the guitarist for the band Bad Brains. This band came from Washington, D.C. and played hardcore punk music.
Bad Brains was highly praised for their new and exciting musical style. Many people see them as one of the most important and best punk rock bands ever. Critics have said that Dr. Know can mix the raw energy of punk with amazing skill. He does this without losing the power of either style.

Dr. Know's Musical Journey
Gary Miller was born in Washington, D.C.. He has mostly played music with his band, Bad Brains. However, he has also worked on other projects.
He performed with Mos Def's group called Black Jack Johnson. Dr. Know also played a guitar solo on the song "Time Consumer" by Coheed and Cambria. This song was on their first album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade. In 2010, he played two songs with students from Paul Green's School of Rock Music. This happened at a show in Philadelphia.
How Bad Brains Started
In a 2012 film called Bad Brains: A Band in D.C., Dr. Know shared some interesting facts. Before Bad Brains formed, the musicians liked many kinds of music. They enjoyed disco and modern jazz.
Then, they saw bands like The Dead Boys play. These underground bands inspired them to try punk rock. This led to the creation of Bad Brains.
Facing Health Challenges
In November 2015, Dr. Know had a serious health issue. He experienced a heart attack. His health quickly became very serious, affecting many of his body's organs.
He was on life support for almost two weeks. Doctors believed he had a very small chance of getting better. His bandmates asked fans for help through a special fundraising campaign. This money helped pay for his recovery. After nearly three months in the hospital, he moved to a special facility. There, he received physical therapy and treatment. This helped him make a good recovery.
New Music Projects
In 2016, Dr. Know started a new music group. This group is called Saudade. It is a supergroup, which means it has famous musicians from different bands.
The group includes singer and guitarist Chino Moreno from Deftones. Also joining are jazz keyboardist John Medeski and bassist Chuck Doom. Guitarist David Torn and drummer Mackie Jayson are also part of Saudade.
