The Dragon Gate sect (called Lóngmén pài in Chinese) is a very important part of Taoism. It belongs to the Complete Reality School of Taoism. This school is special because it mixes ideas from three major Chinese teachings: Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. This makes it a very complete way of understanding Taoism.

The Complete Reality School of Taoism has two main branches: Southern and Northern. The Dragon Gate sect grew out of the Northern branch. Its history goes back to a famous master named Qiu Chang-chun (also known as Qiu Chuji). He lived in the 1200s and was one of the first seven students of Wang Chongyang, who started the Complete Reality School. His name, Chang-chun, means "Eternal Spring."

A powerful leader named Genghis Khan chose Qiu Chang-chun to be in charge of all religions in China. Because of this, the Dragon Gate sect played a huge role in keeping Chinese culture and traditions alive during that time.

Important Dragon Gate Leaders

A very important leader for the Dragon Gate sect was Wang Changyue. He was a 7th generation Dragon Gate priest and the head of the White Cloud Monastery in Beijing. Many people see him as the person who brought the Dragon Gate sect back to life.

Wang Changyue wrote several important books. These include "The Dragon Gate's Core Teachings" and "The Altar Scripture of the Jasper Garden." These books helped explain the sect's ideas and rules.

Another key figure was Min Yi-De, an 11th generation Dragon Gate priest. He worked to combine the ideas of Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism even more deeply. He taught that people should "learn from Buddhism, follow the rules, and practice inner alchemy." Inner alchemy is a way of training your mind and body to become stronger and wiser. Thanks to leaders like him, the Dragon Gate branch grew and became the largest Taoist group in the world today.

After the end of the Qing Dynasty and later during a time called the Cultural Revolution in China, many religious practices faced challenges. People's understanding of Taoism became more focused on what was practiced in temples in big cities.
