Drinking straw facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A drinking straw is a simple tool used to drink liquids. You place one end in a drink, like a milk shake or fruit juice, and suck on the other end with your mouth. This helps you enjoy your drink without tipping the glass. Most straws are made from plastic, shaped into a long, thin tube. However, to help protect our planet, many straws are now made from materials like paper or cardboard.

What is a Drinking Straw?

A drinking straw is a small, hollow tube. It helps you drink liquids from a container. People often use straws for cold drinks such as cola, smoothies, or water. Using a straw can make drinking easier and more fun, especially for children.

How Do Drinking Straws Work?

When you suck on a straw, you are actually removing air from inside the tube. This creates a lower air pressure inside the straw compared to the air pressure outside the straw, which is pushing down on the surface of your drink. The higher air pressure outside pushes the liquid up the straw and into your mouth. It's a simple trick of physics!

The History of Drinking Straws

People have used straw-like tools for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations used hollow reeds or plant stems to drink beer.

The First Modern Straw

The modern drinking straw was invented by an American named Marvin C. Stone in 1888. Before his invention, people often used natural rye grass straws. However, these would often break or leave a grassy taste in the drink.

Marvin Stone's Idea

Marvin Stone was drinking a mint julep on a hot day. He found the rye grass straw he was using kept falling apart. This gave him an idea. He took a piece of paper, wrapped it around a pencil, and glued it together. He then coated it with wax to make it waterproof. This was the very first paper drinking straw! He patented his invention on January 3, 1888.

Different Types of Straws

Over the years, straws have been made from many different materials. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks.

Plastic Straws

For a long time, plastic straws were the most common type. They are cheap to make and very durable. They can be used once and then thrown away.

Environmental Concerns

However, plastic straws have become a big problem for the environment. They are often used for only a few minutes but can take hundreds of years to break down. Many plastic straws end up in oceans, harming marine animals. This is why many places are now trying to reduce or ban plastic straws.

Eco-Friendly Straws

Because of the environmental impact of plastic, many new types of straws have been developed. These are designed to be better for the planet.

Paper Straws

Paper straws are a popular alternative to plastic. They are made from paper and can break down much faster than plastic straws. This makes them more environmentally friendly. However, some people find that paper straws can get soggy quickly in drinks.

Reusable Straws

Another great option is reusable straws. These can be washed and used again and again. They are often made from:

  • Metal: Usually stainless steel, very strong and durable.
  • Glass: Can be elegant, but they can break if dropped.
  • Bamboo: Made from natural bamboo plants, they are biodegradable.
  • Silicone: Flexible and soft, good for kids and easy to clean.

Uses Beyond Drinking

While drinking is their main purpose, straws can also be used for other things. Sometimes they are used in science experiments or for crafts. They can also be helpful for people with certain medical conditions who find it hard to lift a cup.
