Du Wei (Chinese: 杜伟; 2 October 1962 – 17 May 2020) was an important Chinese diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in another country. Du Wei served as China's top representative, called an ambassador, in two different countries. He was the Ambassador to Ukraine from 2016 to 2019. Later, he became the Ambassador to Israel in February 2020. He was born in the Shandong province of China and spent his career working for his country.

Du Wei's Career as a Diplomat

Before becoming an ambassador, Du Wei worked in China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was a deputy director in the Policy Planning Department. This department helps plan how China will interact with other countries.

Ambassador to Ukraine

From 2016 to 2019, Du Wei was China's ambassador to Ukraine. During this time, he worked to make the relationship between China and Ukraine stronger. He met with Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Minister, Vadym Prystaiko, to discuss how their countries could work together more.

He also helped Ukraine by arranging a special program. Through this program, the Chinese government gave important equipment to Ukraine's State Emergency Services. This equipment helped Ukraine deal with emergencies. Du Wei was also involved in talks about a Chinese company wanting to buy a Ukrainian defense company called Motor Sich.

Ambassador to Israel

In February 2020, Du Wei became China's ambassador to Israel. When he first arrived, he had to stay in quarantine for two weeks because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a safety measure to prevent the spread of the virus.

Because of the pandemic, he presented his official papers to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in a special way. Instead of meeting in person, they did it virtually, using technology.

Personal Life

Du Wei was married and had a son.

His Passing

Du Wei was found dead in his apartment in Herzliya, Israel, on May 17, 2020. He was 57 years old. The Chinese Foreign Ministry later stated that he had died due to "health reasons."
