Understanding the Racial Conflict
During this period of unrest, a Black man named Rob Ashely was accused of a serious crime involving a white man on July 6, 1919. He was taken to jail.
Protecting Rob Ashely
While Rob Ashely was in jail, some white community members threatened to attack the jail. They wanted to harm Ashely without a fair trial. This act is known as a lynching. However, an armed group of Black community members quickly formed. Their goal was to protect the jail and stop any attempts to harm Ashely.
Keeping the Peace
Later, a group of about eighty local security forces, called "home guards," arrived. They helped prevent more trouble. Even with their presence, the situation remained very tense for several weeks in Dublin.
The Wider "Red Summer" Events
The events in Dublin were part of a larger period of unrest across the United States. This time was later called the Red Summer of 1919.

Other major events included the Chicago race riot of 1919 and the Washington race riot of 1919. These riots caused many injuries and millions of dollars in property damage.
