Dubmatique is a hip hop group from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They formed in the 1990s. The group includes Dj Choice, OTMC, and Jérôme-Philippe. They were the first French-language hip-hop group from Canada to have a number one hit song.

Many people see Dubmatique as pioneers who helped start French Canadian hip hop. They are also the only group in this style to have an album sell over 100,000 copies. This earned them a "Platinum" award.

Discovering Dubmatique's Journey

How Dubmatique Started

Disoul and OTMC met in Senegal in the 1980s and became friends. In the early 1990s, Disoul moved to Montreal. He joined a hip-hop radio show called Dubmatique. Soon, he and his co-host Cedric decided to turn it into a music group.

In the mid-1990s, OTMC came to Canada and joined the group. After that, they invited Dj Choice to join them. In 1994, they made their first public appearance. They performed a freestyle rap on a mix-tape by Cut Killer called Tape 9-Too Leust.

Early Success and First Album

By 1995, the group was performing shows in local clubs. They also took part in the launch of an album by Alliance Ethnik. They helped with the soundtrack for the movie La Haine. Dubmatique won the award for Best Hip Hop Group of the Year at the Gala Mimi. That same summer, they performed at the big music festival Les FrancoFolies de Montréal.

In 1997, Dubmatique released their first album in Canada. It was called La force de comprendre. This album quickly sold over 125,000 copies. This made it a "Platinum" album. Their songs and music videos like Soul Pleureur, La force de comprendre, and Plus rien n’est pareil became very popular. They reached the top of the music charts. Critics liked their lyrics and music production. The album also featured French rappers Menelik and 2 Bal.

Dubmatique performed about 150 shows across Quebec. At the Félix Awards, which are like the Grammy Awards for French Canadian music, they won "Best Rock Alternative Album". This was because there was no Hip Hop category at the time. They were also nominated for Group of the year and Revelation of the year.

In 1998, the band won the Félix Award for Group of the year. They also received two more nominations. These were for Show of the year and Best Seller. In English Canada, they were nominated for a Juno Award. This was for the Best Selling Francophone album.

More Albums and Awards

Their second album, simply called Dubmatique, came out in 1999. They released popular songs and music videos from it. These included La vie est si fragile, which featured violinist Ashley MacIsaac, and Mémoires. The album sold 35,000 copies in its first week. This earned it a "Gold" award.

They worked with two members of the group IAM. Shurik’n was on the song L’avenir. Akhenathon remixed a song from their first album. Other Montreal artists also joined in. These included El Winner of Latitude Nord, D-Shade of Shades of Culture, and Mr. Len. The album was well-liked. Dubmatique continued to perform in Quebec and fill large venues.

At the Félix Awards, they won "Hip Hop Album of the year". They were also nominated for Group of the year. At the Gala Soba, they won two Sound of Blackness Awards. These were for Best Group of the year and Best Francophone Hip Hop Group of the year.

Dj Choice did not work on their third album. Disoul and OTMC worked with other producers. In 2001, they released the album Influences. The songs Ragga Dub and Sexcite-Moi were chosen as singles. Sexcite-Moi was a collaboration with rock singer Éric Lapointe. The group continued to do well on the music charts. They won the Félix Award for Best Hip Hop Album of the year. This album also featured the first professional appearance by R&B singer Corneille.

Solo Projects and Reunions

In 2004, their record label released a collection of their hit songs called Mémoires. After this, Disoul and OTMC started their own solo music projects. In 2005, Disoul used his real name, Jérôme-Philippe. He released an album where he mixed rapping and singing. OTMC released his own hip hop album in 2006. It was called Sincérité volontaire. Their songs were played on radios across Quebec.

In 2008, a fan created a group on Facebook. The goal was to ask Dubmatique to get back together. Over 50,000 fans joined this group. This encouraged OTMC and Disoul to make a new album. In 2009, they released Trait d’union. Dj Choice also helped. He produced the song Patience. This song featured Sir Pathetik, Imposs, and John John. Singers Barnev Valsaint, Jennifer Silencieux, and Mike Coriolan also took part. They released songs and music videos for La Vibe and Cold World. The Les FrancoFolies de Montréal music festival organized their first reunion show.
