Duchess Marie-Thérèse of Württemberg (born 12 November 1934) is a German noblewoman. She has a very long full name: Marie Therese Nadejda Albertine Rosa Philippine Margarethe Christine Helene Josepha Martina Leopoldine. She is the daughter of the person who claimed to be the Duke of Württemberg, a royal title that ended in 1918.
Marie-Thérèse was the first wife of Prince Henri, Count of Clermont. Prince Henri was considered by some to be the rightful heir to the French throne. Marie-Thérèse is the mother of Prince Jean, Duke of Vendôme, who is now the head of the House of Orléans. This family also claims the French throne.
Marie-Thérèse's Family Background
Marie-Thérèse was the fifth child in her family. She was the fourth daughter of Philipp Albrecht, Duke of Württemberg. Her mother was Archduchess Rosa of Austria, Princess of Tuscany. Marie-Thérèse was born at Altshausen Castle in Germany.
Marriage and Children
Marie-Thérèse married Prince Henri, Count of Clermont, on 5 July 1957. The wedding took place in Dreux, France. Henri was the oldest son of Henri, Count of Paris, and Princess Isabelle of Orléans-Braganza.
Three years after Marie-Thérèse's wedding, her younger brother, Carl, Duke of Württemberg, married Henri's younger sister, Princess Diane d'Orléans. This meant the two families became even more connected.
Marie-Thérèse and Henri had five children together:
- Princess Marie d'Orléans was born on 3 January 1959. She married Prince Gundakar of Liechtenstein.
- Prince François, Count of Clermont was born on 7 February 1961. He passed away on 30 December 2017. Prince François had significant health challenges from birth.
- Princess Blanche d'Orléans was born on 10 September 1962 in Ravensburg. She also had significant health challenges from birth.
- Prince Jean, Count of Paris was born on 19 May 1965. He married Philomena de Tornos y Steinhart.
- Prince Eudes, Duke of Angoulême, was born on 18 March 1968. He married Countess Marie-Liesse de Rohan-Chabot.
Marie-Thérèse and Henri separated legally on 23 February 1977. They divorced on 3 February 1984. After their divorce, Marie-Thérèse received the title Duchess of Montpensier. This title was given to her by her former father-in-law.
