Sir Dudley Howard Ridout (born January 15, 1866 – died May 3, 1941) was a brave British soldier. He reached a very high rank, Major-General, in the Royal Engineers. This was a special part of the British Army that focused on engineering and construction.
Early Life and Family
Dudley Ridout was born in Calcutta, which was part of British India at the time. His father, Joseph Bramley Ridout, was also a British soldier. His father even served in a military expedition in Bhutan. Dudley's grandfather, Thomas Gibbs Ridout, had an important job too. He worked for the Bank of Canada for many years.
Becoming a Soldier
Dudley Ridout studied at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. After graduating, he joined the Royal Engineers as a lieutenant in 1885. He steadily moved up the ranks, becoming a captain in 1894. He was promoted to major in 1902.
Serving in Wars
Dudley Ridout served as an intelligence officer in South Africa during the Second Boer War (1900-1902). This was a conflict between the British Empire and two independent Boer states. After the war, he took command of a military company in South Africa.
He also served during World War I. From 1915 to 1921, he was the top commander of the troops in the Straits Settlements, which included places like Singapore. He was also part of the local government councils there. He retired from the army in 1924.
Dudley Ridout passed away in 1941 in Richmond upon Thames, England. He was buried in Richmond Cemetery.
Legacy
A row of cottages at the Royal Military College of Canada is named "Ridout Row." This was done to honor Dudley Howard Ridout's father, Captain Joseph Bramley Ridout. These cottages have been updated and now house the Canadian Defence Academy headquarters.
Personal Life
In 1904, Dudley Ridout married Maude Elizabeth Hutton. They had a son, Colonel Dudley Gethin Bramley Ridout, who also became a soldier. Their son commanded a group of soldiers in Normandy during World War II. Dudley and Maude also had a daughter named Estelle Wilmot Hutton.
