Duette's Past: A Look Back
How Duette Got Its Name
People in Duette have a story about how the area got its name. They say it came from an early settler named Duette, who was from Canada. There are no official records showing someone with that name bought land there. However, some early settlers did not always make legal claims to their land. So, a record might not exist. The area was also sometimes called Dry Prairie.
Early Post Office
Duette had its own post office for many years. It opened on July 17, 1888. The post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open until January 2, 1907.
The Duette Cracker Fest
For a while, Duette held a special event called the Duette Cracker Fest. This was an outdoor fair and concert. It was organized to help raise money for education. The goal was to keep the local one-teacher elementary school from closing. The Manatee County School District was thinking about closing it.
The School's Closing
Sadly, in 2016, the school was officially closed for good. This happened because there were not enough students. Also, there were financial reasons. Even though the school closed, its history lives on.
Duette Preserve: Nature's Gem
Duette is also home to the Duette Preserve. This is the largest nature preserve in the Manatee County system. It protects important natural habitats and wildlife. It's a great place to explore Florida's natural beauty.
