Discovering Duffee's Past
Duffee has a long and interesting history. It started as a quiet community and grew thanks to railroads and businesses. Let's explore how this place changed over time.
How Duffee Got Its Name
When Duffee was first settled, it had different names. It was first known as Liberty. Later, it was called Rue. The community was started by a group of Baptists from the Liberty Church. This happened not long after the American Civil War.
Things started to change around 1906. A lumber company called Buckwalter Lumber Company built a railroad through the area. The community was then renamed Duffee. This new name honored a railroad surveyor who worked on the line.
Railroads and Growth in Duffee
The railroad brought new life to Duffee. In 1915, a train station, called a depot, was built. This depot opened the next year on the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad line. By 1916, Duffee was growing. It had two churches, a school, and a mill. A mill is a place where raw materials are processed, like wood or grain.
In 1918, about 85 people lived in Duffee. The railroad helped connect the community to other places. This made it easier for people and goods to travel.
Duffee's Post Office History
Duffee has had several post offices over the years. The first post office here was named Rue. It operated from 1902 to 1906. Later, a post office opened under the name Duffee. This one served the community from 1914 to 1959.
After that, it became the Duffee Rural Station. This post office operated from 1959 to 1969. Post offices are important for connecting communities. They help people send and receive mail.
Challenges and New Beginnings
Like many places, Duffee faced tough times. During the Great Depression, many people struggled to find work. A lot of residents left Duffee to find jobs elsewhere. This caused the community to shrink.
However, Duffee saw a small comeback in 1937. The Columbus Planing Mill was founded there. A planing mill processes wood. This new business helped bring some life back to the community.
