Dukes County was a special area, like a county, that belonged to the Province of New York for a short time. It existed from 1683 to 1691.
What Was Dukes County?
Dukes County was created on November 1, 1683. It was formed at the same time as other counties in New York, like Kings County and Queens County.
Where Was It Located?
This county included several islands located east of Long Island. These islands were the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Island.
Its Short History
In 1691, Dukes County was no longer part of the Province of New York. It was moved to a new area called the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
How It Changed
Once it became part of Massachusetts, Dukes County was split into two separate areas. These new areas were Dukes County (which still exists today) and Nantucket.
