Dumas, Missouri facts for kids
Dumas was a small, quiet place in Clark County, Missouri. It was not a big city with its own government, but rather a small group of homes and buildings. This type of place is called an unincorporated community. Dumas was located in the U.S. state of Missouri.
It was built right next to Dumas Creek. This creek flows into a bigger river called the Des Moines River. The community was just west of where the creek and the river met. A major train line, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, also ran very close to Dumas. This train line connected Dumas to other towns. Nearby towns included Revere to the southwest and Argyle, Iowa to the northeast.
History of Dumas
Dumas was officially started in the year 1888. It got its name from the nearby Dumas Creek. When a community is "laid out," it means people planned where the streets and buildings would go.
A post office was also opened in Dumas in 1888. A post office was very important for a community back then. It was where people sent and received letters and packages. The Dumas post office stayed open for many years, until 1917. After that, the community slowly became less active.
