Duncan Alexander Eliott Mackintosh (born December 1, 1884, died May 29, 1966) was an important leader in Scottish history. He became the 31st Chief of Clan Chattan. Clan Chattan was a group of several Scottish Highland families, known as clans, who joined together. Duncan Mackintosh became their chief in 1947. This happened after some changes in who was next in line to lead the clan.
Becoming a Clan Chief
Duncan Mackintosh was born on December 1, 1884. He was the third son of Alexander Mackintosh, who was an indigo planter in India. Duncan and his older brother, Aeneas Mackintosh (who became a famous explorer), both went to school in England. They studied at Bedford Modern School.
After school, Duncan Mackintosh joined the military. He served in the Boer Wars from 1900 to 1902. Later, he joined the Rhodesia Mounted Police from 1902 to 1916. After his military service, he became a farmer in Rhodesia.
The Clan Chattan Leadership
Duncan Mackintosh was the closest relative to Alfred Donald Mackintosh. Alfred was the 29th Chief of the Clan Chattan. Alfred Mackintosh died in 1938. His large estate in Inverness-shire covered 124,000 acres. Even King George V was friends with Alfred and enjoyed visiting his estate.
When Alfred Mackintosh wrote his will, he chose a more distant cousin to inherit his estate. This cousin was Rear-Admiral Lachlan Donald Mackintosh. This decision caused a disagreement within the Chattan Confederation.
How Duncan Became Chief
The official decision about who would be chief came from the Lord Lyon King of Arms. This is a special official in Scotland who deals with coats of arms and clan leadership. On March 27, 1947, the Lord Lyon King of Arms declared Duncan Alexander Eliott Mackintosh as the 31st Chief. This meant he was officially recognized as the leader of the entire Clan Chattan.
At this time, the leadership of Clan Mackintosh became separate from the leadership of Clan Chattan. Rear-Admiral Lachlan Donald Mackintosh became the chief of Clan Mackintosh. However, Clan Mackintosh still remained the most important clan within the larger Clan Chattan group. The current and past chiefs of Clan Mackintosh have also been presidents of the Clan Chattan Association.
Family Life
On September 8, 1912, Duncan Mackintosh married Ellen Primrose Smith. Duncan Mackintosh passed away on May 29, 1966. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
