History of Dungannon
How Dungannon Started
Dungannon was officially created in 1835. A man named George Sloan was responsible for laying out, or planning, the community. He did this when the Sandy and Beaver Canal was extended to reach this area. Canals were like man-made rivers used for transporting goods and people.
Naming the Community
George Sloan decided to name the new community "Dungannon." He chose this name because it was the same as his hometown in Dungannon, Northern Ireland. It was a way to remember where he came from.
The Post Office in Dungannon
A post office was opened in Dungannon in 1840. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. At first, the name of the post office was spelled "Dunganon." However, in 1871, the spelling was changed to "Dungannon," matching the community's current name. The post office continued to serve the community until it closed down in 1903.
