History of Dunkerton
Dunkerton has a cool history that started a long time ago! In 1853, two brothers named James and John Dunkerton traveled from Dubuque, Iowa. They wanted to find a good spot to claim land. They found a place near a town called Lester, and their land became known as Lesterton. Later, it was renamed Dunkerton.
Sadly, John passed away in 1854 and was buried in a small cemetery. James stayed and continued to build up their land. On Christmas Day in 1854, he married Christiana Hodges. Years later, when James was 60, he and his oldest son sold some of their land to a railroad company. They asked for the railroad to be extended to Iowa. This important step helped the city of Dunkerton grow into what it is today!
