Dunlay is a small, quiet community in Medina County, Texas. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Dunlay is located about six miles west of Castroville and eight miles east of Hondo, right along U.S. Highway 90.

Dunlay's Early Story

The community of Dunlay has an interesting past. It was first established in 1881 and was originally called Enterprise. It grew up around the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, which was very important for travel and trade back then.

How Did Dunlay Get Its Name?

The name "Dunlay" came from a local hero named Jerry Dunlay. He was a train conductor who worked on the railway that passed through the area. People decided to name the town after him.

The Post Office and Name Change

A post office was set up in Dunlay in 1890, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. Norval Seymour Murray was the first postmaster. On May 10, 1895, the community officially changed its name from Enterprise to Dunlay, honoring Jerry Dunlay.
