It is considered an "unincorporated community," which means it does not have its own separate local government. It is also a census-designated place (CDP), which is a special area the government defines just for counting people.

Dunlo is found in a valley, with Sulphur Creek flowing through it. This creek is a small stream that eventually joins the Little Conemaugh River. The community is situated between two other places called Beaverdale and Salix. In 2010, about 342 people lived in Dunlo.
