A Look Back in Time

How Dunmovin Got Its Name

Dunmovin was not always called by its current name. It was first known as Cowan Station. This name honored James Cowan, who was an early settler in the area.

A Busy Stop on the Road

Cowan Station was an important place long ago. It served as a freight station. This means it was a stop where goods were loaded and unloaded. Silver bars from the Cerro Gordo Mines were transported through here. They were on their way to Los Angeles.

In 1936, James Cowan sold his property. That's when the name changed to Dunmovin. It became a useful stop for travelers along U.S. Route 395. People could find a service station, a cafe, and a store there. It was a place where drivers could rest and refuel.

The Post Office

Dunmovin even had its own post office for a few years. It operated from 1938 to 1941. This shows that it was once a more active place.
