Dunn is a place in Benton County, Indiana, that no longer exists as a town. It is sometimes called an "extinct town" because its buildings and community are gone.

This former town was named after a person called Captain James Dunn. It was located about one and a half miles east of a town called Dunnington.

Life in Dunn

In the 1920s, Dunn was a small but active place. It had two general stores where people could buy everyday items. There was also a grain elevator, which is a tall building used to store grain from farms. About half a dozen homes were also in the area.

The Post Office

A post office is a very important part of any town. It helps people send and receive letters and packages. Dunn had its own post office. It opened in 1907. However, it closed just a few years later in 1913. This might have been a sign that the town was getting smaller.

The Railroad Connection

An old railroad track runs through where Dunn used to be. This track goes north and south. Today, the rail line is no longer used and is covered with plants. In the past, railroads were very important for towns. They helped transport goods and people. The closing of the rail line might have also contributed to Dunn becoming an "extinct town."
